Subjects in the MYP and DP
Every MYP student studies eight subject groups: Arts, Design, Individuals and Societies, Language Acquisition, Language and Literature, Mathematics, Physical and Health Education, and Sciences. Students complete the Community Project in Form 8 and the Personal Project in Form 10.
The DP core
- CAS (creativity, activity, service): done weekly for at least 18 months, with a balance between the three parts.
- Extended Essay: a 4,000-word essay on an independent research question, about 40 hours of work with a supervisor.
- Theory of Knowledge: a two-year course, assessed through an exhibition and an essay of up to 1,600 words.
DP subjects
Students choose one subject from each of the six groups, three at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL), based on their plans for university. A student who needs an extra subject in one group may drop Group 6 after talking with the Diploma Programme Coordinator.
Students who plan to take the Indian medical entrance exams can, with IB approval, follow a non-regular Diploma track and take Physics, Chemistry and Biology from Group 4. Students may also take all three sciences as a seventh subject. This path is rare and is discouraged; the Head of School discusses it with the student and parents first.
| Subject group | Choices |
|---|---|
| Group 1: Studies in language and literature | English A: Language and Literature |
| Group 2: Language acquisition | French ab initio, French B |
| Group 3: Individuals and societies | Business Management, Psychology, Economics |
| Group 4: Sciences | Physics, Chemistry, Biology |
| Group 5: Mathematics | Analysis and Approaches |
| Group 6: The Arts (optional) | Visual Arts |
Details of how subjects are assessed and reported are in our Assessment Policy.
